~ Pionus ~
Pionus is
a genus of parrots native to Central and South America.
They are
very quiet in comparison with other parrot families and make excellent pets.
Most commonly kept pet species are the Maximillian (Scaly-headed) and
White-Capped.
Pionus parrots are known for their quiet (compared to other parrots) and
reserved natures. They are not particularly playful, and do not enjoy being
wrestled with or flipped on their backs, but they do provide noninvasive
companionship and are fascinating companion animals.
When excited or frightened, birds of this genus make a characteristic wheezing
or snorting sound that is sometimes mistaken for a sign of distress. They also
have a musky or sweet odour that some people find unpleasant, but others
enjoy.
